Ceremonies

College's Master’s Hooding Ceremony

There will not be an in-person or virtual ceremony for Spring 2021. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites you to participate in the 2021 Graduation Celebration through Kudoboard. This online platform will allow friends and family to celebrate your achievements virtually!

Any master's or doctoral degree student who graduated or will graduate in one of the following terms is eligible to participate: SU 2019, FA 2019, SP 2020, SU 2020, FA 2020, SP 2021, SU 2021, FA 2021.

Please note, this service is free for graduating students and no login or account is needed to post on your board; however, you must register to receive a page. Colleagues, family, and friends will be able to post on your board for up to two months after your board is created. Your board will live on the Kudoboard site indefinitely.

All master's degree students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who are candidates for graduation are invited to participate in the Master's Hooding and Undergraduate Distinction/Highest Distinction Ceremony. This ceremony is a great way for you and your family and friends to recognize your academic achievement. 

Any master's degree student who graduates in the summer, fall, or spring semesters preceding the ceremony or any master's student expecting to graduate in the summer or fall immediately following the ceremony is welcome to participate.  Registration is required. 

If you wish to participate you should:

  1. Register to attend (Spring 2022 registration link forthcoming)
  2. Coordinate with a faculty member to serve as your hooder. You should personally contact your faculty advisor/mentor and ask them to be present at the ceremony to hood you. If you change your faculty hooder after submitting your registration form, please email coga@ku.edu
  3. Purchase regalia (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) for the ceremony. For purchasing information, visit the KU Bookstore on level two of the Kansas Union or visit the graduation regalia section of the KU Bookstore web site. We recommend ordering these items as soon as possible, and no later than May 1. Sizes become more limited as commencement approaches. Please review our Hooding Demonstration» video.

This event is free; however, tickets are required for all attendees. Students may request up to 4 tickets and go on a waiting list for up to 4 more. Tickets are general admission and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have friends or family members who are unable to attend the event in person, they may attend remotely via the live streaming of the ceremony.  

School of the Arts Recognition Ceremony.

SOTA hosts a separate recognition ceremony for all SOTA graduates. SOTA master’s degree candidates are hooded at this ceremony, not at the College Master’s Hooding Ceremony. Please see the SOTA website» for more information.

Doctoral Hooding Ceremony

The 2021 Doctoral Hooding Ceremony will be held virtually. Participation and registration information can be found on the Office of Graduate Studies' Doctoral Hooding Ceremony page.

All August, December, and May doctoral degree candidates are eligible to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony in May at the Lied Center. August and December 2019 doctoral graduates, as well as May and August 2020 doctoral degree candidates, are eligible to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. Commencement

All degree candidates for spring and those who received degrees in the previous summer or fall semesters are eligible to participate in the University-wide Commencement Ceremony in May, also known as “walking down the hill." If students would like their name in the Commencement book, they must apply for their degree through Enroll & Pay by March 1st of the spring semester. Graduates who do not want to be listed in the Commencement program may check the Commencement Book Hold box when they apply for graduation through Enroll & Pay».

Commencement events will be taking place on two weekends in May, and will celebrate the Classes of 2021 and 2020, respectively. In order to accomodate health standards, the events will require registration and guest tickets. Student registration opens March 22 and closes April 4.
